Call for papers for possible inclusion in the AGC book on=20

Geography at Work: Public Policy and Business Applications of
Geographical Analysis

<> As part of its activity agenda for the period 2009-2012, the IGU
Applied Geography Commission will be compiling material for a book it
will be publishing on applied geography to be launched at the 2012 IGU
Congress in Germany. The book is likely to be titled Geography at Work:
Public Policy and Business Applications of Geographical Analysis. The
book will be edited by Robert Stimson and Kingsley Haynes on behalf of
the Applied Geography Commission. About 16 chapters will be included in
the proposed book.
The intent of the edited book will be to present a series of case
studies of the work applied geographers have recently undertaken (that
is completed) and which has been funded or commissioned through
collaboration with a public agency or with a business entity in which it
is clearly demonstrated how methods and tools of geographical analysis
have been used to address a specific issue of public policy or business
concern.</> <> =20

The idea is for the case study projects to illustrate how
geographers have been formally interacting with public agencies and
business to address a real world issue or to help solve a problem.=20
It is intended that the case studies cover a range of social,
economic and environmental issues, relate to a variety of levels of
spatial scale, and have been conducted in a range of contexts in both
the developed and developing worlds. In a case study there will need to
be an explicit focus on geographical analysis in which it is clearly
demonstrated that methods and techniques that are explicitly spatial and
are a well established part of the geographer's 'tool kit' have been
used.</>
A case study should (a) clearly explain how the collaboration with
the public sector agency or business entity with which there has been a
collaboration came about, (b) indicate the level and source of the
funding provided, (briefly outline the nature of the 'brief' for the
work undertaken or 'objectives' of the study), (c) outline the study
research design, data collection, and methods of geographical analysis
used in executing the study, and (d) demonstrate the outputs from the
project and how the findings have been used.=20

Over the next 18 months the Applied Geography Commission will be
organizing a number of meetings, often as special sessions in regular
conferences of professional associations, at which papers will be
presented by researchers who have a case study that they would like to
have considered for inclusion in the book to be published by the
Commission. Final papers for refereeing as chapters in the book will
need to be completed by the end of 2010.

If you have a case study proposal you wish to submit please send a
title, list the author(s) and institutional affiliation(s), and provide
an outline of half a page maximum, and send it to:

Kingsley Haynes, Applied Geography Commission Secretary
(khaynes@gmu.edu) or

<> Bob Stimson, Applied Geography Commission Chair
(r.stimson@uq.edu.au <mailto:r.stimson@uq.edu.au> )
Indicate which of the meetings listed below would be the one at which
you might want to present a draft paper on your proposed case study for
the book.</>=20

Commission at which papers on potential case studies for the book will
be presented at these conferences:=20
